As the lone senior on Hawaii Baptist’s boys volleyball team, Kellen Takatsuka had the perfect ending to his high school career.
Takatsuka, a 5-foot-8 outside hitter, served out the final four points of the third set to give the Eagles their seventh consecutive Division II state title with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 sweep of Kapaa in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball Championships on Saturday night at Blaisdell Arena.
Michael Johnson had a game-high 13 kills and Takatsuka added nine for Hawaii Baptist (23-0), which has won 22 consecutive matches in the state tournament after losing to Pahoa in the 2010 semifinals.
“We have a lot of guys who can score points for us and I thought they did a really good job today,” HBA coach Teoni Obrey said. “We’ve played about 40 matches this year and (Takatsuka) has been carrying us this year. It was great to see him finish strong.”
The Eagles started Takatsuka and Johnson, a 5-foot-9 junior, on the outside and used their ball control and all-around attack to stymie the Warriors (14-1), who hadn’t dropped a set in the tournament.
The third set was tied 20-20 when 6-foot-2 middle Maxwell Wiemken smashed his third kill of the set for a 21-20 Eagles advantage.
Takatsuka went back to serve and teamed with Johnson for back-to-back kills for a three-point lead.
Davin Rausch, the setter who finished with 30 assists and 14 digs, added a kill of his own and then Kapaa hit wide on match point to end it.
“It was good to soak it all in this last game,” Takatsuka said. “I think the team together played really well. Kapaa had a lot of good players — they have a lot of seniors — and they went out (playing) hard.”
Obrey, who has coached the Eagles to nine of the past 10 Division II state titles overall, called Kapaa the toughest Division II foe they’ve faced in recent years.
“I thought Kapaa man-for-man probably outmanned us at certain positions against them,” Obrey said. “They’re probably the best Division II team we’ve played in the last five or six years. I think we were fortunate (to sweep them).”
Outside hitter Carson Schmick and middle Saxsem Shiira tied for a team high with 12 kills apiece for Kapaa, but the Warriors couldn’t capitalize on an opportunity to steal the second set that may have changed the outcome of the match.
Kapaa had nine hitting errors in the second and a key service error that stopped a four-point run with the Warriors leading 14-11.
Kapaa trailed 23-22 and 24-23 but couldn’t stop Takatsuka and Johnson, who put down the final two kills of the set for Hawaii Baptist.
“We really wanted that second set,” Kapaa coach Kapule Kaona said. “We were battling point-for-point throughout that entire set and had we gotten that second one, it would have given our boys a lot more confidence and put them on their heels a little bit.”
