A family cat died Thursday afternoon in a fire at a Niu Valley duplex, where no one was home at the time of the blaze.
Fire Capt. David Jenkins said in an email that other family pets were at the duplex, but neighbors helped remove a number of them before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters fully extinguished the two-alarm fire by 2:46 p.m. at the one-story duplex at 5512 Kawaikui St.
The Fire Department was called at 1:18 p.m., and the first unit arrived at 1:23 p.m., finding smoke and flames coming from the back of the home.
Firefighters went into the duplex, fought the flames and were able to prevent the fire from spreading. The fire was brought under control at 1:37 p.m.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation. No damage estimate has been made.
Man charged in girlfriend’s choking
A 36-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly choked his girlfriend in Wahiawa.
Joey K. Thomas was charged Wednesday with abuse of a family/household member and is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.
Police said Thomas got into an argument with his girlfriend, 38, while they were in their tent on a vacant lot at Uwalu Circle.
The argument escalated when Thomas choked her with both hands and began to step on her head and neck, according to a court document.
The victim yelled to her neighbor to call police. Police said the 38-year-old woman suffered bruises on both sides of her neck.
Police arrived and arrested Thomas.
Teen arrested in downtown robbery
Police arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with a robbery that occurred in April in downtown Honolulu.
Police arrested the suspect shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
At about 7 a.m. April 27, police said, a 13-year-old boy was walking in downtown Honolulu when the suspect approached him. The 16-year-old boy asked for money, then demanded property and threatened the victim with a dangerous instrument.
Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree robbery and released him pending further investigation.
Woman sought in boyfriend’s stabbing
Police are looking for a 40-year-old woman who allegedly stabbed her boyfriend with a knife in Makiki.
The assault occurred at an Anapuni Street residence at about 9:10 p.m. Wednesday. Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the suspect’s boyfriend, 40, suffered a stab wound to his left arm.
Police said the suspect fled after the assault. Paramedics took the 40-year-old man, who was conscious when EMS arrived, in serious condition to a trauma hospital.
A description of the suspect was unavailable.
