The University of Hawaii’s Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell advanced to today’s men’s semifinals of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships at Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Rosenmeier and Cowell finished undefeated in pool play at 3-0 earlier on Friday then swept Dillon Hoffman and Reid Dominguez 21-18, 21-14 in Friday afternoon’s quarterfinal played at the Hermosa Beach Pier courts.
The Rainbow Warrior duo, seeded 10th out of 11 pairs, will face UCLA’s Jackson Bantle and Hagen Smith, seeded second, in one semifinal (5:30 a.m. Hawaii time). The other semifinal has top-seeded Lucas Yoder (USC) and Michael Saeta (UC Irvine) against third-seeded Nathan Vander Meer (Davenport) and Logan Webber (Cincinnati).
The winners advance to Sunday’s championship while the losers meet for third place Saturday afternoon.
Ishii named coach of the Year
David Ishii will be honored as the Positive Coaching Alliance-Hawaii Coach of the Year at the Pacific Club on Wednesday morning.
Ishii, a former Hawaiian Open champion and longtime golf pro, has also been a longtime coach and supporter of youth golf programs on his home island of Kauai and throughout the state.
Also, Greg Lum Ho and Kyle Smith will receive Double-Goal Coach awards. Last year’s Coach of the Year, recently retired Hawaii women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji, is expected to attend.
HPU knocked out in national semifinals
The No. 6 Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis team was eliminated 5-0 by No. 3 Lynn (Fla.) in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Championships on Friday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Sharks dropped all three doubles positions to open the day, then lost the first two singles positions to end the match.
