A man died Monday after being pulled from the ocean in South Kohala, Hawaii island police said.
Officers responded at 9:37 a.m. to a report of an unresponsive man pulled out of Makaiwa Bay off South Kaniku Drive in the Kohala Coast resort area.
Firefighters performed CPR on the man and took him to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died at 10:55 a.m., police said.
The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of his death.
Keaau man allegedly fled fatal crash
Hawaii police arrested a 26-year-old Keaau man in connection with a fatal two-vehicle crash in Keaau on Sunday night.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Just after 8:40 p.m., police said, a 2003 Mazda sedan was traveling south on Highway 130 when it rear-ended a 1990 Toyota pickup truck at the intersection of Shower and Pohaku drives, the Hawaii Police Department said in a news release.
When police arrived, they found the truck engulfed in flames. Police spokesman Maj. Sam Thomas said firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.
That’s when they discovered the burned body of a man partially outside the vehicle.
An autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death. This is the 12th traffic-related fatality in Hawaii County this year, compared with 10 at the same time last year.
Police said the sedan driver fled on foot after the crash. Officers located him shortly after and arrested him on suspicion of negligent homicide, reckless driving, accident involving death or serious injury and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

East Oahu snorkeler hospitalized
A snorkeler was in critical condition Monday afternoon after she was found unresponsive along the shoreline at Hanauma Bay.
Lifeguards performed CPR on the woman, believed to be in her 40s or 50s, before she was transferred to the care of paramedics, according to an Emergency Medical Services report. She was subsequently transported to an emergency room for further treatment.
The incident was reported at 2:30 p.m.
Suspect in Mililani store robbery arrested
Police arrested a 31-year-old man after he allegedly robbed a retail store in Mililani.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, police said, the suspect entered the store, took some items and left. An employee stopped the suspect outside the establishment, where the suspect brandished a knife.
Police said the 31-year-old man fled the scene with the stolen merchandise. The employee was not injured.
Police located the suspect about 20 minutes later at Hikikaulia Street near the Town Center of Mililani and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree robbery.
