Two fire companies remained overnight Wednesday standing watch in Hawaii Kai where a brush fire continued to burn after sunset.
The Fire Department at 5 p.m. dispatched six units for a total of 16 personnel to Kamilonui Valley where a brush fire scorched 20 acres by 7:15 p.m. The first fire crew arrived at 5:03 p.m. Air 1 made water drops until 7:15 p.m. and ceased operations due to darkness. Ground crews used hand tools to control the spread of the fire.
No damage to structures was reported, and no homes were immediately threatened, although some utility poles may be in danger, fire Capt. David Jenkins said.
A fire watch continued overnight to ensure a few homes at the bottom of the valley would be protected, he said.

Trial scheduled for driver in fatal head-on Kapaa crash
A trial has been set for September for a 46-year-old man accused of killing a 19-year-old woman in a fatal two-car crash in Kapaa last month.
A Kauai grand jury indicted Cory Safadago last week on manslaughter and other charges in connection with the death of Kayla Huddy- Lemn of Kapaa around 10:45 p.m. on April 27.
Police said Safadago was driving a stolen Nissan pickup truck on Kuhio Highway when he crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Mazda sedan operated by Huddy-Lemn.
Safadago continued south on the highway and stopped near Kintaro Japanese Restaurant, where he allegedly fled on foot. Police found him near Wailua Shopping Plaza. After a brief struggle, officers arrested him.
Kauai Prosecutor Justin Kollar said Safadago’s blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash was .248, approximately three times the legal limit of .08.
