Four more cases of mumps were reported Monday on Oahu by the state Department of Health, bringing the total this year to 51.
The new cases include children and adults, and two of them are linked to other cases on the island, the department said. None required hospitalization.
The contagious disease is likely to spread further, the department warned, adding that the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is effective at protecting against mumps. The MMR vaccine is available at local pharmacies across the state.
The classic mumps symptom is a tender, swollen jaw, but other symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite. Some people with mumps have very mild or no symptoms.
The disease is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Body found at base of cliff
Maui firefighters Monday found the body of a man inside a vehicle at the bottom of a 100-foot cliff at Nakalele Point.
Maui Fire Department officials said in a news release that an opihi picker came across the vehicle with the body inside.
Firefighters got the call at 4:50 p.m., but a poor phone connection made it difficult to find the vehicle’s location.
The fire helicopter crew discovered the vehicle at 5:38 p.m. at the bottom of a cliff below the Nakalele Lighthouse.
Fire rescue personnel descended by rope from Air-1 and removed the body from the vehicle.
Firefighters from three stations and a battalion chief responded to the incident.
The man’s body was airlifted at 6:20 p.m. to Kahekili Highway and was transferred to police.
Police will release the man’s identity once relatives are notified.
The fire services chief declined to release a description of the vehicle.
