University of Hawaii freshman Alexis Brenzil finished 22nd in the javelin and sophomore Karen Bulger came in 46th at the NCAA outdoor track and field West preliminary competition on Thursday in Austin, Texas.
Both Rainbow Wahine throwers came up short in their bids to finish in the top 12 and qualify for the NCAA Championships set for June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.
Brenzil was in eighth place after her first throw of 150 feet, 10 inches. Her next two attempts covered 137-5 and 142-5. But with the top 16 seeds yet to throw, Brenzil’s mark slipped out of the top 20. Texas A&M sophomore Madalaine Stulce won the event at 172-5.
Bulger’s best of three throws traveled 128 feet in her second appearance in the NCAA preliminary round.

>> Dr. Spencer Chang will step down as volunteer coach after 14 years overseeing the Rainbow Wahine pole vaulters, UH announced on Wednesday. Chang was the program’s first pole vault coach and will leave to spend more time with his family and expand his role an orthopedic consultant with the UH athletics medical team.
