A 25-year-old man has been charged with a
Punchbowl home invasion robbery that police said
involved suspects impersonating police officers.
Anthony Riley Jr. was charged Friday with three counts of first-degree robbery, three counts of kidnapping and one count of first-degree burglary. He was being held Saturday at Oahu Community Correctional Center with a $200,000 bail. He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
Two other suspects remained at large Saturday.
Riley was arrested Wednesday.
The robbery occurred at about 12:45 a.m. May 17 at Aleo Hale condominiums on Kamamalu Avenue.
Three men entered a family’s home, tied up four occupants with duct tape and took cash and other belongings before fleeing, police said. In addition, one of the assailants sexually assaulted a victim before leaving, police said. During the robbery, the suspects repeatedly asked where the money was and for the location of valuables and jewelry.
A police affidavit filed in District Court on Friday did not say why the suspects
expected to find valuables.
On Saturday, a man at the home declined to comment.
According to the affidavit, all three assailants were wearing shirts adorned with “SHOPO,” the acronym for the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers, and they rang the doorbell before entering the home.
A 47-year-old woman told police she opened the door because when she asked who it was, someone responded that it was the police.
When she opened the door, a man rushed in and grabbed her by the head while wielding a gun, the affidavit said. Another man told her to keep quiet as he taped her mouth and wrists.
The woman’s son, 23, was in his room when he heard his mother cry out. The suspects bound his hands and legs with duct tape after he went out to check what was happening to his mother.
The man’s father, 47, told police he was awakened by two men in his room pointing a gun at his head, and telling him to stay still. The suspects threatened to shoot him if he didn’t tell them where the valuables were located, the affidavit said.
The suspects tied the father’s hands and covered his mouth with tape. The robbers also brought a second woman — a friend of the younger man’s sister, who was not home at the time — out of the sister’s bedroom, restrained her hands and held her at gunpoint.
After taking various items, one robber fondled the 47-year-old woman’s upper body over her clothes, the affidavit said.
