Pearl City’s Brittany Fan and partner Esther Lee of Los Alamitos, Calif., won their round-of-32 match Monday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Fan and Lee defeated Meghan Stasi of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Dawn Woodard of Greenville, S.C., 2 up at Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
Fan and Lee will play today against Sammi Lee of Athens, Ga., and Mary Ellen Shuman of St. Simons Island, Ga.
At the U.S. Men’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in Village of Pinehurst, N.C., Mililani’s Spencer Dunaway and Peter Kuest of Fresno, Calif., lost in the round of 32.
The pair fell to Brandon Cigna of Arlington, Va., and Ben Warnquist of Olney, Md., 1 up at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
Oda eighth in NCAA golf championship
UNLV junior and Moanalua graduate John Oda tied for eighth in the individual standings at the NCAA Division I men’s golf championship to lead the Rebels into the match-play portion of the tournament in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Oda carded a 3-over-par 75 on Monday at Rich Harvest Farms to close the four-day stroke-play tournament at 3-under 285 and in a three-way tie for eighth.
UNLV tied for seventh in the team standings at 7 over, earning the Rebels a spot in the match-play quarterfinals. They face top-seeded Vanderbilt today with the semifinals to follow. The championship match is scheduled for Wednesday.
Kang qualifies for U.S. Women’s Open
So Whi Kang of Seoul qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open by winning a sectional qualifier Sunday at Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai.
Kang finished at 144 in a field of 22 golfers to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open, which will be July 13-16 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.
Moore surfs into quarterfinals in Fiji
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore won both her heats Monday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Outerknown Fiji Women’s Pro at Tavarua, Namotu, Fiji.
Moore won her first-round heat with a 16.77 and claimed her third-round heat with a 17.76.
Hawaii’s Bethany Hamilton and Tatiana Weston-Webb will surf in the fourth round.
Weston-Webb eliminated fellow Hawaii surfer Coco Ho in the 1-and-1 second round.
UH coed sailors finish 12th at nationals
The University of Hawaii coed squad finished 12th at the Laser Performance College Sailing Team Race National Championship on Sunday in Charleston, S.C.
UH finished with a record of 5-10 in the 16-team field. On Sunday, the Rainbows beat Tufts and lost to Hobart & William Smith Colleges.
Hawaii was eliminated from title contention after Saturday’s competition.
