University of Hawaii setter Norene Iosia has been named to the U.S. Women’s Junior National Training Team.
Iosia, a rising sophomore, is among three setters named to the 16-player training team by USA Volleyball. The 12-member U.S. team for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship will be selected from that group.
The team will train July 2-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The U20 world championship is set for July 14-23 in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico. The team is coached by Texas A&M’s Laurie Corbelli.
Iosia posted 971 assists while starting 26 matches as a freshman last season and was a first-team All-Big West selection.
Delanian leaving Wahine hoops staff
Associate head coach Alex Delanian is leaving the University of Hawaii women’s basketball program to take a similar position at UC Santa Barbara.
Delanian and UH head coach Laura Beeman confirmed the move on Tuesday.
“Alex took a position at UCSB to be closer to his mom and return to the mainland after spending four years in Hawaii,” Beeman said in a text message.
Delanian is the second member of the staff to leave UH since the end of the season, joining assistant Brad Langston. The program posted an advertisement for an assistant coach on the school’s web site.
Delanian, a USC graduate, joined the UH program in 2013 as director of operations and was given his first collegiate coaching job the following season. He was promoted to associate head coach prior to last season and focused on the UH post players.
“It was just a really personal decision. It’s a great opportunity to go back to the mainland and be closer to family and friends,” said Delanian, who will face his former team twice in the Big West season.
“I absolutely love it in Hawaii and I loved my time here. … I’ve had the luxury of working with Coach Beeman the last four years here and two years at USC. That was the most phenomenal experience and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Honors for UH water polo duo
University of Hawaii junior Chloe Barr and sophomore Irene Gonzalez earned recognition on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Division I All-America teams.
Barr made the third team, while Gonzalez was honorable mention.
Barr led the Rainbow Wahine with 45 goals, followed by Gonzalez with 40. Both were first-team All-Big West selections for the 11th-ranked Rainbow Wahine (15-11).
