Zackary Kaneshiro shot a 6-under-par 65 on Monday to claim the top qualifying spot in the open division of the Manoa Cup at rainy Oahu Country Club.
The event, in its 109th year, is considered the state amateur match-play championship.
Kaneshiro will face No. 64 seed Jacob Pritchard in today’s first round of match play.
David Saka finished second at 68 and Tyler Ota and Kolbe Irei tied for third at 69.
Brent Grant, last year’s open division champion, turned pro. Justin Ngan, the runner-up last year, finished 20th at 3 over. He will face No. 45 seed Ryan Chang, who shot a 79.
Mari Nishiura was awarded the top seed in the women’s division by virtue of winning last year’s title.
Nishiura will face No. 16 seed Katrina Huang in today’s round of 16.
Isabella Leung was the top women’s qualifier Monday after shooting a 1-over 72.
Zietz surfs into fourth round in Fiji
Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz edged Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas 12.93 to 12.80 in the third round of the Outerknown Fiji Pro on Monday at Tavarua, Namotu, Fiji.
Zietz will face Australia’s Bede Durbidge and Stuart Kennedy in the fourth round.
Hawaii’s John John Florence lost his third-round heat to Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti 16.83 to 13.33.
