A 49-year-old man was killed Thursday morning at the mouth of the Waianae Boat Harbor after being run over by a 21-foot fishing boat.
The man had a mask and fin and a surfboard or paddleboard when a 21-foot recreational powerboat exiting the harbor ran him over, officials said.
“He was with another person, and he was apparently run over by this boat,” said Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Emergency Services. “They stopped and rendered aid, along with a couple of people from another boat.”
Police said the 49-year-old was swimming 500 feet from the harbor entrance when he was struck by the boat.
State Department of Land and Natural Resources officials said the victim had been staying at the nearby Waianae Rest Camp.
The victim was an Army reservist with the 9th Mission Support Command and was stationed at Fort Shafter, a spokeswoman for the command said.
Enright said an Ocean Safety lieutenant paddled out and helped bring the man to shore, where he was pronounced dead. “It happened right at the harbor entrance,” she said.
The call came in at 7:20 a.m., Enright said.
Police, firefighters, lifeguards and paramedics all responded.
Police are investigating the case, which is classified as an unattended death.
On Jan. 9, 2016, a boater in an orange Zodiac motorboat struck and killed 59-year-old Sri Shim, who was free-diving 600 yards off Lanikai. His 25-year-old hanai son, Trey Albrecht, was also struck and received cuts that severed tendons in his left arm.
Shim died of blunt force and propeller injury. His body was recovered nearly three hours after the accident.
