Three members of the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team and an incoming freshman were selected as part of the United States Men’s Junior National Team announced Tuesday.
UH outside hitters Brett Rosenmeier and Austin Matautia and middle blocker Patrick Gasman were chosen, as was future Rainbow Warrior Gage Worsley, brother of sophomore setter Joe Worsley. UCLA sophomore and Punahou graduate Micah Ma‘a also made the team, which will be coached by George Mason’s Jay Hosack.
The Rainbow Warriors have the most representation on the 12-member squad, which will compete in the FIVB Under-21 World Championship from Friday to July 7 in the Czech Republic. The U.S. will face Turkey, Cuba and Russia in its opening-round pool. The USMJNT has never medaled in the U-21 competition. The closest it has come is fourth place in 2011.
>> Former University of Hawaii beach volleyball player and AVCA All-American Katie Spieler will compete in the NORCECA Continental Tour with Karissa Cook in Ochos Rios, Jamaica, from Thursday to June 26. This will be Spieler’s first international event of the season.
>> UH sophomore libero Larry “Tui” Tuileta made the cut for the U.S. squad for the Pan America Cup in July.
