HECO donation helps map trek
Hawaiian Electric Co. donated $10,000 to The Outdoor Circle to fund a project that would put 360-degree images of Hawaii into Google Maps for the Google Trekker program.
The utility announced Wednesday it donated to the nonprofit to help the organization create a virtual tour.
A two-man team from the Outdoor Circle will journey throughout the state over the summer to visually map different locations across Maui, Oahu, Hawaii island and Kauai. The Street View Trekker camera, a wearable 50-pound backpack outfitted with a 15-camera system, collects panoramic imagery every 2.5 seconds. HECO said the images will be uploaded to Google Maps in the fall.
