1. Will da Wabi-Sabi Cat be da next Hello Kitty? Hailing from Hilo, Brian Tanimoto based dis kawaii kitty on one drawing from his then-13-year-old daughter Erynn. Their Hilo store (278 Kilauea Ave.) and online store (lifeiswabi-sabi.com) sell his line of artwork, magnets, clothing and greeting cards, as well as supercute plushies. A 6-inch Wabi-Sabi Cat Plushie is $9.95 at Razor Concepts at Pearlridge Uptown; 486-3003.
2. Maneki neko is ubiquitous in Hawaii. Get ’em for greet you in ukuplanny stores. But what about rarer and more deadly underground version of this kawaii cat — da Teenage Mutant Maneki Neko by Derick Fabian, da artist known as 7Sketches? These cool vinyl stickers ($4 each) dropped recently at Mori by Art + Flea at South Shore Market in Ward Village; 593-8958.
3. In Hawaii we love our sea creatures. Jeff and Mary “Gee” Pescador are da creative minds behind MeekNest Hawaii. They get lotta art prints featuring their uniquely patterned watercolor renditions of Hawaii reef fish, whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and more. But what’s even mo’ cuter is their characters turned into pillow dolls ($30). Stop! It’s cuddle time! Available at HomeGrown at Pearlridge Uptown; 721-4458.
4. For ova 25 years Taj Clubhouse has been setting da bar for kawaii in Hawaii. They recently started selling cute, stuffed felt figures of all their characters ($22.95 each). Each one is delicately hand-sewn with love. I betchoo only hard-core fans going know da names of all these guys. Taj stay located at Ward Warehouse (until July 31) and Ward Centre.
5. In 2015, 111-Hawaii launched its supercute Diamond Headdog and Diamond Headolphin characters on plushies ($48), totes ($22 to $38), shirts and key chains. Check out Book Off at Ward Warehouse (until July 31) for its line of products.
