Police evacuated three floors of a residential building in Kakaako late Tuesday after gunshots were fired inside an apartment, splintering wood that caused minor injuries to a woman and child in a nearby unit.

Police arrested two men, both 27, Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangering, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of second-degree criminal property damage. One of the two was also arrested for promotion of a harmful drug in the fourth degree.

Just after 9 p.m. Tuesday, police received calls about gunshots fired in an apartment on the 24th floor of Kamakee Vista at 1065 Kawaiahao St. Officers evacuated residents from the 23rd through 25th floors.

Lt. Thomas Smith of the Honolulu Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division said a woman and her child sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries from wood that splintered when a bullet struck their wall or door. They live in an apartment one or two doors away from the suspect.

According to Shayne Enright, Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman, the 4-year-old boy had splinters in one of his elbows.

The police department’s negotiations team responded, and at about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, the two men voluntarily surrendered.

Police are continuing their investigation. One of the men has a criminal record of driving without a license, terroristic threatening and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Three months ago, area residents and businesses were rattled by another shooting. Early in the morning on March 28, police said two men later identified as Keith Rambin and Denzel Davis demanded money from a 46-year-old man at a bar at 532 Cummins St.

Soon after, an altercation occurred and Rambin allegedly shot the 46-year-old in the chest.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Rambin, 21, and Davis, 22, of Wahiawa after they turned themselves in to police.

Rambin was indicted on a charge of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery and two counts of firearm-related charges. The grand jury also indicted Davis on two counts of first-degree robbery and four counts of firearm-related charges.

Rambin and Davis remain in custody at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
