The Hui Nalu junior men’s crew earned Hawaii’s lone medal at this week’s IVF Va’a World Distance Championships on Taaone Bay, Tahiti, earning a silver on Thursday.
Hui Nalu was second in the 19-under division, finishing the 16.8-mile V6 event in 2 hours, 3 minutes and 20 seconds. (Paddler names were unavailable). Host Tahiti won the nine-canoe race in 1:59:34.
Only eight of the 33 countries/states earned medals in the three-day competition. Tahiti won a medal in all 10 events, including seven gold, in the inaugural outrigger canoe event.
In other results involving Hawaii paddlers:
Team Revolusun was fourth out of 10 crews in the master-40 women V6 27K race, timed in 2:32:26. New Zealand won in 2:18:19;
Lanikai Canoe Club was fifth out of six crews in the junior women 19-under V6 27K race with a time of 2:39.55. New Zealand won in 1:38:21;
Kai Bartlett was fifth in the master-40 men V1 18K in 1:42:59. Tahiti’s Chevalier Hikutini bested the field of 19 in 1:36:10;
Team Bradley placed sixth out of 13 crews in the open women V6 27K event in 2:21:39. Tahiti won in 2:12:54;
Patrick Dolan was seventh out of 23 open men’s V1 racers, finishing the 18K course in 1:40:17. Tahiti’s Keven Ceran Jerusalemy won in 1:30:46;
And Hobey Moss was ninth in the J19 men V1 18K in 1:55:04. The 11-canoe event was won by Tahiti’s Revi Thon Sing.
Warriors play well in U.S. volleyball loss
University of Hawaii returning junior outside hitter Brett Rosenmeier had 14 kills and 10 digs, and incoming freshman libero Gage Worsley 16 digs, but it was not enough as the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team lost to Egypt in its final pool-play match of the FIVB Men’s Under-21 World Championship on Thursday in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic.
Rainbow Warriors incoming sophomore middle Patrick Gasman came off the bench for three kills in Set 4, and incoming sophomore hitter Austin Matautia had a kill in Set 4 in the 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 loss. Reserve setter Micah Ma‘a (Punahou/UCLA) added three digs and Rosenmeier an ace for the U.S.
The Americans (1-5) begin classification play Saturday against Morocco (1-5) and conclude the competition on Sunday. The U.S. will finish between 13th and 16th place.
Granato part of CNT-Red win in Minneapolis
University of Hawaii returning junior outside hitter McKenna Granato came off the bench in Set 3 to help the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Red complete a sweep of CNT-White 25-13, 25-13, as the round-robin CNT-Minneapolis volleyball competition concluded at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Thursday.
Granato finished with two kills, a block and an ace as CNT-Red (2-0) moved into today’s championship match against the winner of today’s play-in match between CNT-White (1-1) and CNT-Blue (0-2).
Competing for CNT-White is libero Tita Akiu (Kamehameha/Texas Tech). No dig statistics were available.
The CNT-Minneapolis squad, split into three teams, is part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline. It is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
