The Coast Guard and the Hawaii County Fire Department were expected to resume the search today for a man missing at sea.
Shane Roena, 48, fell into the water near Kaalualu Bay just before 6 p.m. Monday while trying to clean a cooler, the Coast Guard said.
His son, 10, saw him fall and then disappear shortly afterward. The two were fishing.
Two helicopter crews from the Fire Department conducted initial searches of the area. The boy was airlifted from the rocky shoreline to a landing zone, where he was picked up by his grandmother.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and C-130 Hercules from Barbers Point searched the area Tuesday while the crew of the cutter Galveston Island, home-ported in Honolulu, was en route, the Coast Guard said. The ocean was rough, with 40 mph wind and seas of 8 feet.
Fire crews searched the shoreline, meanwhile, and dive teams conducted underwater searches in the immediate vicinity, northeast of South Point. The fire helicopter searched the shoreline and up to 3 miles offshore, the Fire Department said.
