Ceramic works by Momoe Nakajima, who is inspired by her connections to Japan and Hawaii, are on exhibit at Parc Promenade Gallery in the Waikiki Parc Hotel, 2233 Helumoa Road, through Sept. 14.
The Japanese-born, Hawaii-reared artist earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Hawaii at Manoa this year and works as kiln and glaze technician and exhibition installation assistant at Windward Community College’s Gallery ‘Iolani. Her recent works include ceramic figures paired with jars.
According to the artist, the jars serve as a guide similar to Hawaiian aumakua. Each pair has matching surface designs featuring plants and flowers from Japan and Hawaii.
