Hurricane Eugene graduated from a tropical storm Saturday as it roiled the waters of the eastern Pacific.
At 5 p.m. Saturday, Eugene was due south of Baja California, Mexico, moving northwest at 8 mph.
It had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, just above hurricane strength, with higher gusts, the National Hurricane Center said.
Forecasters said the storm will likely run roughly parallel to the coast of Mexico for the next five days and not approach Hawaii. Eugene is offcially the fifth named storm of the 2017 hurricane season, which began June 1.
