Manu O Ke Kai remained unbeaten Saturday by winning on its top rival’s home surf.
Manu O Ke Kai won 14 events, including six consecutive toward the end, to claim the Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa’a’s Na Keiki O Ka Moi Regatta at Maili Beach.
Manu O Ke Kai, which is 6-0 this season, finished with 110 points to claim the AAA Division (25-42 crews). Na Keiki O Ka Moi, which was assessed 20 penalty points for various race infractions, had 70 and Kaneohe recorded 33.
“This is actually our favorite beach, our favorite race — it’s one of the nicer beaches overall,” said Manu O Ke Kai assistant coach Tim Vierra. “As far as the performance, it’s just teamwork.”
Manu O Ke Kai won events 33-38 — women sophomore, men sophomore, women senior, men senior, women 40 and men 40. The club also triumphed in the women 65, boys 15, women 55, men 55, mixed men and women 45, women freshman, men open 4 and mixed men and women 40.
“The women’s program stepped it up and the men, we pull hard, we train hard. It’s a serious thing when we’re in the water, we don’t want to lose,” said Vierra, who paddled on the winning men senior, men 40 and mixed men and women 40 crews.
Early in the regatta, Na Keiki O Ka Moi was assessed 15 points in penalties for not submitting its paddlers lists in time for the boys 12, girls 13 and boys 13 crews. The penalties were issued after the races, and the three Na Keiki O Ka Moi crews would have earned 10 points. Na Keiki O Ka Moi also was penalized five points because its women sophomore crew (event No. 33) didn’t scratch at least three events prior to its race. Coach Lisa Kaaekuahiwi said a paddler left the site and didn’t return until after the race was over.
“This morning we started off with a few bad paperwork errors and we had people showing up after the race started,” Kaaekuahiwi said.
She added it was a “frustrating” day and there were “plenty hurt feelings.”
The points Na Keiki O Ka Moi lost out on likely would not have been enough to overtake Manu O Ke Kai in the standings.
There were 42 scoring events, with points awarded on a 5-3-2-1 basis. The paddlers headed straight out from shore against the wind and headed back.
Ka Mamalahoe scored 35 points to claim the AA Division (13-24) and the Waikiki Beach Boys had 25 to take the A Division (12 fewer).
The Kamehameha girls 15, and Manu O Ke Kai’s mixed men and women 45, women 40 and men 40 crews improved to 6-0 for the season.
“It was really fun with all the waves,” said Carly Yamada of the Kamehameha girls 15 crew. “This was harder because we normally practice in the Ala Wai — it’s very flat and the wind. But over here all the waves, all the wind and all the currents.” Yamada added the Kamehameha crew has used about a dozen paddlers in the six-seat canoe this season.
“I feel like all the girls are strong, so everyone is interchangeable and it still works well together,” she said.
Barbara Souki was a part of Manu O Ke Kai’s unbeaten mixed men and women 45 and women 40 crews.
“It’s all about our sportsmanship, our togetherness, our bond as a whole club,” she said. “As a crew, as we get out there we just kind of stick together and put it all together.”
The Na Keiki O Ka Moi men 50 crew ended Manu O Ke Kai’s undefeated season by recording a narrow victory (3:55.87 to 3:56.30).
“The koa boat was moving and coming back, they’re strong at the end,” said Na Keiki O Ka Moi paddler Danon Kaaekuahiwi. “We knew they were coming. It was just a matter of holding them off.”
The Na Keiki O Ka Moi crew used a refurbished koa canoe for the first time this season instead of a fiberglass model, according to Kaaekuahiwi.
Varnish was used to cover up scratches and the canoe was extended to the maximum 45 feet, he said. Kaaekuahiwi added the koa canoe is more buoyant and turns faster.
The next Hui Wa’a event is the Waikiki Beach Boys Regatta on Saturday at Waikiki Beach.
