A scuba diver pulled from waters off Barbers Point on Saturday has died.
The man, believed to be in his 60s, was found unresponsive about a mile from shore and was taken in critical condition to a local emergency room. He died later that day.
An official identification is pending, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Man rescued at Ko Olina in critical condition
A 54-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday after suffering a medical emergency in the waters of Ko Olina Lagoon 4.
According to an EMS report, the man was in shallow water when he suffered a “medical condition” around 11:40 a.m.
Paramedics performed lifesaving measures and transported the man to a local emergency room.
Hawaii island brush fire contained
A runaway brush fire that consumed about 2,200 acres in Waimea was 100 percent contained by Saturday evening, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
The fire was first reported around noon Friday in a dry, grassy area along the 64-700 block of Paele Alanui Street and spread quickly across land within Puukapu Farm lots.
The blaze prompted the temporary closure of Highway 190 between the Old Saddle Road intersection and the Waimea Airport Road intersection.
On Saturday, bulldozers cleared a firebreak, and a helicopter assisted firefighting efforts with water drops throughout the day. The fire was considered 100 percent contained by 6 p.m.
The Hawaii Police Department is investigating. Cooking sparks Waikiki Landmark fire
A sprinkler system effectively suppressed a high-rise fire in Waikiki on Saturday night, the Honolulu Fire Department said.
Six companies with 24 firefighters responded at 8:17 p.m. to a report of a fire at the Waikiki Landmark, 1888 Kalakaua Ave.
The crews found an extinguished cooking fire on the 19th floor and set about clearing out the smoke and water, the department said by email.
Two fire sprinklers had prevented extensive damage to the building by keeping the fire from spreading, the department said. The damage estimate has yet to be determined.
One adult had difficulty breathing and was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 8:55 p.m.
3 boys playing with fireworks ignite brush fire
Fireworks triggered a 3-acre brush fire in Lahaina on Saturday afternoon that came within 40 feet of a house.
According to the Maui Fire Department, three 12-year-old boys were playing with fireworks along Lahainaluna Road near Hookahua Street when strong wind blew a firework toward an area of dry grass, which caught on fire. One of the boys called 911.
Arriving firefighters found the fire quickly advancing toward homes on Hookahua Street but were able to contain it before any structures were affected.
Police closed Lahainaluna Road for about an hour while crews battled the blaze.
