If you happen to be in Kapolei, you might also want to drop in on chicken specialist Bonchon in the Ka Makana Alii food court.
Bonchon opened Thursday, with its fast-casual menu of Korean and Asian specialties ranging from tteokbokki ($12.95) to takoyaki ($7.95).
But it’s the fried chicken that’s the star of the menu. The spicy or soy-garlic wings are twice-fried, achieving a light, airy and brittle skin that won’t brok’ your teeth or coat your fingers with a treacly, sticky goo. I didn’t find the spicy wings very spicy at all, but if you need extra sizzle, it’s accompanied by a Sriracha aioli, just as the soy wings are accompanied by a soy glaze (which also worked magic when applied to an $11.95 salmon avocado ball).
The wings are easily worth a drive from anywhere on Oahu, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Bonchon becomes the island’s favorite new go-to spot for chicken wings.
They start at $13.95 for 10 pieces; or you can try them in a lunch special from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, when eight wings, four drumsticks and seven chicken strips run $9.95.
