A Hawaii County police task force investigating numerous property crimes captured one man and is trying to determine whether other suspects were involved.
County police charged 25-year-old Arnold “BJ” Fernandez on Wednesday for a multitude of crimes ranging from burglary and auto theft to weapon violations occurring from July 3 to Monday.
Fernandez appeared Thursday afternoon in Puna District Court and was arraigned on 19 charges, including 12 felonies. His bail is $275,000, and a preliminary hearing is set for Monday.
A police task force Monday captured Fernandez after receiving tips on his whereabouts from the public in the Orchidland area of Keaau. Fernandez ran from a nearby retail business as officers approached an unattended Subaru at a business complex on Orchidland Drive. He was found on a Hawaiian Paradise Park property of an uninvolved resident.
Police said Fernandez was wanted on an outstanding warrant and was reportedly driving a stolen Subaru.
Police charged Fernandez with four counts of first-degree burglary, three counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, three counts of driving without a license, two counts of ownership of a prohibited firearm, drug and firearm charges and unauthorized possession of personal, confidential information, theft of a credit card, second-degree reckless endangering and first-degree terroristic threatening.
Anyone with information on these incidents or any stolen vehicles is asked to call police at 935-3111 or Sgt. James Correa at 961-2272, or email him at James.Correa@hawaiicounty.gov.
