Manu O Ke Kai wrapped up an undefeated Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a paddling season in typical fashion Saturday — a strength in numbers showing from its adult paddlers.
Manu O Ke Kai won 16 events, including 12 adult races, to claim the AAA Division of the Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a Championship Regatta at Keehi Lagoon.
“It was hard work. Every practice I could tell everybody wanted to improve and push themselves,” said Manu O Ke Kai women’s coach Carmen Van Kralingen.
Manu O Ke Kai, which went 7-0, scored 100 points in the AAA Division (25 crews or more). Na Keiki O Ka Moi finished second with 81 and Kaneohe was third with 31.
There were 40 scoring events, with points awarded on a 5-3-2-1 basis.
Manu O Ke Kai’s perfect record includes a victory June 24 when its club and Na Keiki O Ka Moi finished tied atop the standings. Manu O Ke Kai won a coin flip and was awarded the regatta win.
Hui Wa‘a will send its top three crews in each event to the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association Championships on Aug. 5 at Hanakao‘o Beach Park on Maui. Each crew has been accumulating points over the seven regattas.
“We qualified a lot of crews, but unfortunately it’s outer island and not everybody will be able to make it,” Van Kralingen said.
Among Manu O Ke Kai’s winning crews Saturday were the undefeated women 40 and men 40 crews.
The Manu O Ke Kai men 40 crew has been at it for quite a while.
“For like seven years, we’ve been together,” said steersman Moku Sanborn. “We wanted this to go into states. We know the kids (of the other crew members), the grandkids and we get together and hang out and we go to birthday parties and weddings, so, yeah, we’re really close.”
The Kamehameha girls 15 crew also finished 7-0.
“We’re all really happy and we always get excited before each race,” said steersman Arianna Radona. “Each race we really get pumped up and we all come together.”
The Manu O Ke Kai mixed men and women 45 crew finished 6-0, with the event not being held Saturday.
I Mua won three events and finished with 36 points to win the AA Division (13-24) for the fifth time this season. Ka Mamalahoe was second with 31 and Lokahi third with 19.
“It’s a combination of the kids’ program, our women’s program, our men’s program all buying in together and really working hard throughout the entire season,” said I Mua coach Jason Barretto.
Lahui O Koolauloa captured two events and scored 26 points to claim the A Division (12 or fewer) for the third time this season. The Waikiki Beach Boys placed second with 20 and Haleiwa Outrigger was third with 16.
Lahui O Koolauloa is in its first year back in Hui Wai since disbanding in 1983, said coach Sage Chee.
“I’m excited about the way we started this brand new season and we’re looking forward to seasons ahead of us,” said Chee, who added Lahui O Koolauloa has about 60 paddlers.
Chee’s son, Vonn, is one of his assistants. They also coach Kahuku High School’s paddling team.
