Tropical Storm Greg continued to weaken as it approached the Central Pacific on Monday, but two other major storms following in its wake are increasing in intensity.
Greg was 1,405 miles east of South Point, Hawaii island, as of 5 p.m. Monday. The storm bore maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph.
Forecasters predict that Greg will become a tropical depression by Wednesday.
Tropical Storm Irwin gathered force as it continued to move west-northwest at 3 mph. The storm was 760 miles southwest of the tip of Baja California, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, as of 5 p.m. Monday.
Irwin was expected to become a hurricane by today.
Hurricane Hilary, sporting maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, was expected to become a major hurricane by today and continue strengthening through Wednesday.
As of 5 p.m. Monday, the storm was 290 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, moving west-northwest at 9 mph.
Meanwhile the last remnants of former Tropical Storm Fernanda continued to bring unsettled weather over the state Monday.
In the 24-hour period ending at 5 p.m. Monday, gauges at Dillingham Airfield recorded 3.44 inches of rain. Heavy rainfall was also recorded at Poamoho (2.97 inches) and Makua Ridge (2.91).
On Kauai the heaviest rainfall was recorded at
Kilohana (2.72) and Wainiha (2.31) over the same period.
Forecasters predict a return of breezy tradewinds, more sunshine and less humid conditions through the rest of the week.
