A man was in critical condition Saturday after he jumped into the ocean to help a woman in trouble at Spitting Caves.
The woman managed to get out and was in stable condition, according to city officials.
At 5 p.m., fire crews responded to reports of two swimmers in distress about 300 feet off Spitting Caves in Hawaii Kai.
According to reports, the woman jumped off the rocks and got into trouble in the water.
A man, 25 to 30 years old, jumped in to help the woman but disappeared below the surface.
The woman, 19, was able to get ashore with the help of people nearby, fire Capt. Kendall Ching said.
Lifeguards, who reached the scene before the fire crews, spotted the man at the bottom in about 40 feet of water, Ching said.
Fire crews with scuba gear pulled him to the surface, he said. The man was not breathing and had no pulse.
Fire crews performed CPR and brought the man to shore, transferring him to an ambulance at Maunalua Bay Beach Park at 5:36 p.m. He was taken to an emergency room in critical condition, said Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
Suspect held in Hawaii Kai shooting, assault
A 45-year-old man is facing charges of attempted murder and assault after allegedly shooting a woman and assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Hawaii Kai, authorities said Saturday.
City paramedics treated a 49-year-old woman with an “apparent gunshot wound to the lower extremities” and took her to a hospital in serious condition, according to Emergency Medical Services officials. The girl’s condition was not listed.
Honolulu police said the man used “a dangerous instrument” to injure the woman, then assaulted the girl Friday.
The man and woman had been arguing before he attacked her, and he assaulted the teenager when she tried to intervene, police said.
The suspect was arrested without incident on Friday on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and assault in the third degree. He remained in custody Saturday.
