Hawaii island police arrested a 36-year-old Puna man in connection with a shooting incident at Isaac Hale Beach Park that critically injured one man and left two others in stable condition.
The man was arrested Monday on suspicion of first-degree assault.
According to police, multiple shots were fired during a confrontation between two groups of people at the lower Puna beach park about 6:20 p.m. Sunday.
A 35-year-old Pahoa man was initially taken in critical condition to Hilo Medical Center before being transported to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Two others, a 25-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, both from Mountain View, were transported to Hilo Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said a 49-year-old Mountain View man who allegedly shot the 35-year-old man fled the scene in a vehicle. Police arrested the suspect at the intersection of Highway 132 and Pohoiki Road shortly afterward on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police closed the intersection just past Lava Tree Park on Sunday night to investigate.
Police said a confrontation occurred between two groups of people at the Pohoiki Boat Ramp at the beach park. Preliminary estimates indicate 15 to 30 people were involved in the fight.
