Kauai’s Tatiana Weston-Webb looks ready to defend her Vans U.S. Open of Surfing title after clinching Heat 5 with a score of 13.74 in Tuesday’s opening round at Huntington Beach, Calif. Fellow local surfers Carissa Moore and Coco Ho placed second in their respective heats.
Both Moore and Ho survived the elimination round — Moore defeated Australia’s Bronte Macaulay with a score of 15.83 to 5.23, and Ho edged Laura Enever, 11.67 to 10.20. Weston-Webb will face Ho in the second heat of Round 3, while Moore competes in Heat 4.
On the men’s side, Haleiwa’s Torrey Meister placed fourth in Heat 13 of Round 2. The competition continues today with Keanu Asing kicking off Heat 14.
UH track and field an All-Academic team
The University of Hawaii women’s track and field squad was among 218 women’s teams that received All-Academic honors for the 2016-17 season announced Tuesday. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recognized the Rainbow Wahine for the 13th consecutive year. The team compiled a GPA of 3.16.
Chaminade trio named ITA scholar-athletes
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association honored three Chaminade women’s tennis players for their academic achievements on Tuesday. Cai Yan Fang, Hannah Parker, and Kim Spring were named ITA scholar-athletes, and the entire women’s squad was named an ITA All-Academic team for its 3.23 GPA.
HPU’s Hoynaski nominated for NCAA award
Hawaii Pacific University women’s tennis player Nicole Hoynaski advanced as a nominee for the prestigious 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
The senior from Sydney, Australia, is among 34 NCAA Division II athletes competing for the award. She joins 58 Division I and 53 Division III nominees advancing to the group of 145. A record 543 nominations were submitted this year. Hoynaski is a three-time ITA All-American and has led the Sharks to consecutive final four appearances.
