The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team’s nonconference schedule will include a December road trip to Las Vegas to face Texas A&M and Oregon in the Duel in the Desert.
The Rainbow Wahine face Texas A&M on Dec. 20 and Oregon on Dec. 22 at UNLV’s Cox Pavilion. Both games tip off at 10 a.m. Hawaii time.
UH will compete in the Desert Division in the six-team event. Mississippi State, last season’s national runner-up, Syracuse and host UNLV will play in the Rebel Division.
Oregon defeated UH 86-49 last November in Honolulu on its way to the Elite Eight. Texas A&M reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Lono named HPU co-head coach
Jarnett Lono has been promoted to co-head coach of the Hawaii Pacific University softball team, the school announced on Wednesday.
Lono served as an assistant coach since 1999 and will share head coaching duties with Bryan Nakasone.
Lono has been part of the HPU softball program since enrolling in 1995 following an All-State high school career at Roosevelt. She capped her collegiate career in 1999 by earning NFCA Division II third-team All-America honors as a second baseman and remained with the HPU athletic department, serving as an assistant coach, sports information director and compliance coordinator during her tenure.
Waimanalo to host Polo Invitational
The Kahala Hotel and Resort Hawaii Invitational of Polo returns to the Waimanalo Polo Fields on Sept. 16 with a new format.
The event will use an All-Pro, Highest-Goal format set at 50 (25 goals per team). The main event is set to start at 3 p.m. with a concert and after-party scheduled for 6:30.
