FOODFEST ON THE HUNT FOR KIDS WHO COOK
Calling all culinary whiz kids: The Hawaii Food and Wine Festival wants you.
Through Sept. 30 the festival invites students to submit healthful, original recipes for the Localicious Recipe Contest. The entries must include locally grown ingredients.
The top three finalists in each of two age categories — grades 4 to 8 and grades 9 to 12 — will cook live at the festival’s Keiki in the Kitchen event on Nov. 5 at Bishop Museum. Chef judges Michelle Bernstein (of Crumb on Parchment bakery-cafe in Miami), Rory Herrmann (Sprout Restaurant Group, Los Angeles) and Sven Ullrich (Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa) will deem the grand prize winners.
Speaking of which, top prize in each age group is a two-night stay at the Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, with an additional $500 scholarship for the winner in the teen category.

ECLIPSE, LOCO STYLE
Monday’s upcoming solar eclipse has inspired astronomers, budding scientists and a couple of restaurants.
>> At L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, a commemorative eclipse T-shirt featuring the elements of a loco moco — fried egg and hamburger patty moving into place like the moon and the sun in an eclipse. The shirts will be given to the first 100 customers who buy loco moco plates Monday at the Keeaumoku Street or Airport Trade Center locations, beginning at 10 a.m. After the giveaway ends, the shirts will be sold for $12 at those locations or online at 808ne.ws/l-leclipse.
>> Maui’s Krispy Kreme outlet is joining a national promotion to go dark ahead of the solar eclipse. The doughnut chain is giving its signature glazed treats a chocolate sheen for the first time ever — to recognize the total sensory experience that is an eclipse. The doughnuts will be available Monday and for limited hours on Saturday and Sunday.
