A 24-year-old California woman was killed Tuesday when the moped she was riding crossed the centerline and collided with a flatbed truck in Makena, Maui.
Police identified the woman as Alexis Patrice Jenkins of New Castle, Calif.
Police said Jenkins was not wearing a helmet. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The moped was heading northbound on Makena Alanui Road at about 2 p.m. when it crossed the centerline and hit the southbound truck, police said.
Police said the driver of the white 2018 Chevrolet flatbed truck was a 74-year-old Kihei man. He and his passengers were not injured.
This was Maui County’s sixth traffic fatality for 2017, compared with 11 at the same time last year.
Driver dies in vehicle rollover
A 70-year-old driver died when he lost control of a multipurpose vehicle, causing it to roll over and crash in Haliimaile.
Police identified the driver, the lone occupant of the brown 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe, as Maake M. Via of Haiku.
Police said the crash occurred just before 7 p.m. Monday on Haliimaile Road near Hoomalie Place. The Tahoe was traveling south when the driver lost control.
The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected.
