To coincide with what would have been legendary waterman Duke Kahanamoku’s 127th birthday, another class of talented and influential water sports figures will be inducted into the Waterman Hall of Fame on Thursday at the Outrigger Canoe Club.
The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser will present the Hall of Fame gathering to honor 2017 inductees John and Jim Foti, Tim Guard, Pokey Watson Richardson, and the late Tommy Holmes.
The Fotis of Lanikai Canoe Club are Hawaii paddling icons and ambassadors of the sport. Guard is a champion paddler and surfer as well as an advocate for educating keiki through water sports. Richardson is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and former world-record holder in three swimming events. Holmes was an avid big-wave canoe surfer and a co-founder of the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., features a dinner, live music and an auction. Proceeds will benefit the ODKF’s college scholarships and grants program. For more information or to purchase tickets, log on to DukeFoundation.org.
