The Hawaii basketball team’s full 2017-18 schedule is finally known.
UH plugged the public’s knowledge gaps on Monday with the full release of its slate, which includes 20 home games at the Stan Sheriff Center. Four nonconference home games were new: Adams State (Nov. 27); Hawaii Hilo (Dec. 9); Utah Valley (Dec. 17); and Howard (Dec. 29).
The nonconference highlights — a Nov. 24 home date against Nevada, a Dec. 2 game at Utah of the Pac-12, and a meeting with Miami of the ACC in the opening round of the Diamond Head Classic — were previously reported.
Among the coming nonleague foes, Nevada (35), Miami (44), and Utah (96) scored highest in 2016-17 RPI, while Prairie View A&M (306), Howard (339), and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (345) brought up the rear.
UH opens the season Nov. 10 against familiar foe Pine Bluff in the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic, following a Nov. 1 preseason exhibition against Hawaii Pacific.
Third-year coach Eran Ganot, asked about the strength of schedule, replied that it will be sufficiently challenging to prepare his team for its 16-game Big West slate. For UH, that begins Jan. 4 at Long Beach State, the team that beat the ’Bows back-to-back to end their 2016-17 season at 14-16 (8-8 BWC).
“You’re looking at the Rainbow and you’ve got two NCAA Tournament teams (North Dakota and Troy),” Ganot said. “Combine (that with) … Nevada, three. Utah was NIT, but they’ve been in postseason every year for a while. Opening up with Miami and at least one (other) likely NCAA team as well in the Diamond Head, I think a combination of those things are great challenges and opportunities for us.
“I think we took a step this year. We’re looking forward to future schedules, a combination of competitiveness, exposure and opportunities to play in front of our home crowd.”
UH ends the regular season on the mainland for the fourth straight year, at Cal State Fullerton on March 3.
After going without a nonconference road trip last season because of the late addition of the Pearl Harbor Invitational, UH booked the stand-alone game at Utah.
“Now we’re getting back to that one-game road trip,” Ganot said. “Learn how to travel, prepare for a tough road environment and also against a really good team … in an area we’ve recruited.”
UH reverted to scheduling two D-II games from the single one it slotted for 2016-17. The 2017-18 schedule is the fourth in five seasons to include a pair of D-II foes.
The Adams State (Colo.) Grizzlies already were coming to Honolulu to play a local D-II team (Hawaii Pacific), Ganot said.
“It’s year to year,” Ganot said. “You’ve seen over the years, we’ve had one or two. … There’s a combination of things you’re looking at in terms of ideal dates, dates that work. They happened to fit this year, but I think moving forward we’re going to try to get back down to one.”
Ganot said his staff always makes an effort to bring in a Maui Invitational team the Friday before that tournament, like UH did with eventual national champion North Carolina last season.
“Some years you hit, some years you don’t, but we have as much information as we can for future years to see if we can continue to do that, and there’s been good conversations thus far.”
