Stormwater runoff has prompted the state to issue a brown-water advisory for the coast from Kalapaki to Kealia on Kauai.
The alert came Tuesday from the Clean Water Branch of the state Department of Health.
The public is advised to stay out of floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to possible contamination from overflowing cesspools, sewage, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, animal carcasses, germs, chemicals and flood debris.
Not all coastal areas may be affected by runoff. However, brown water should be avoided, state officials said.
Thunderstorms struck the island Monday night. A flash flood warning was in effect until 10:45 p.m.

Traffic on Queen Kaahumanu will shift today after repaving
Changes begin today for traffic on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, the state Department of Transportation announced.
Cars, trucks, buses, bicycles and pedestrians will be shifted to the newly paved makai section beginning at 9 p.m.
Two-way traffic will be moved between Hina Lani Street and a point north of Keahole Airport Road from the existing mauka roadway.
The shift is expected to be completed at about 6 a.m. Thursday, weather permitting, the department said. At that point the existing mauka portion of the highway between Keahole Airport Road and Hulikoa Drive will be closed.
Traffic control measures, including flaggers and police officers, will be on hand to direct traffic during the transition.
Work will continue on the second phase of the highway widening project, with completion targeted for August 2018.
