For just the 12th time in the history of the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll, the Hawaii women’s volleyball team is unranked.
The Rainbow Wahine, 0-3 for the first time since 1980, received 30 points, five spots outside the rankings. The last time Hawaii was not in the poll was in 2014, but it remains No. 3 all-time in the weekly rankings at 500 weeks. Only Stanford and Nebraska have been ranked all 512 weeks.
In Monday’s poll, Stanford moved up a spot to No. 1, receiving 53 first-place votes. Minnesota was at No. 2, followed by Florida and preseason No. 1 Texas.
Hawaii hosts the Hawaiian Airlines Classic beginning Thursday. The Wahine play Western Carolina on Thursday, followed by South Dakota on Friday and No. 22 Utah on Sunday.
>> Hawaii middle hitter Sky Williams was voted Big West Conference volleyball freshman player of the week on Monday.
Williams, of Bellflower, Calif., had 22 kills and 21 blocks in three matches during the Texaco Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
Rainbow Wahine soccer loses to Seattle
The Hawaii soccer team got blanked for the second straight game in a 2-0 loss to Seattle University on Monday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Redhawks (2-2) of the WAC claimed the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic title, while UH dropped to 2-2 after its first 2-0 start since 2007.
“Two set pieces, just so undisciplined (defensively),” UH coach Michele Nagamine said. “People open in the box, super soft going up for the challenge. It’s stuff that’s avoidable, so in one breath I’m glad that these things are easily fixable. It’s just disappointing we let ourselves get in this position all the time.”
Seattle got on the board in the 57th minute when Natasha Howe picked up a loose ball in the box and fired it in from 10 yards. Jessie Ray headed in a pass from Stephanie Spiekerman in the 78th minute to ice it.
UH had scoring chances go high from Sonest Furtado in the first half and Raisa Strom-Okimoto in the second.
