A trial parking plan is in place as of Friday at the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources announced.
The idea is to make more spaces available for people who keep boats there.
Under an agreement with Diamond Parking Services LLC, the three dozen parking stalls will be assigned to harbor tenants by permit. The trial period ends Aug. 31, 2018.
The department’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation will look at the results with an eye toward a long-term parking concession at the harbor.
The parking plan will allow the boating division to monitor the available stalls daily and ensure users comply with all signs. The test period will also allow the department to study the revenue potential of these spaces after hours.
“Historically, the available parking at Lahaina Harbor has been managed only on weekdays during regular business hours while the harbor office is staffed,” Edward Underwood, boating division administrator, said in an email statement Friday. “In the evening, on weekends and holidays there has been little enforcement and boat owners with vessels in the harbor have had a difficult time finding parking there.”
The plan is similar to that at Maalaea Small Boat Harbor, which generates about $3,100 per month, the state said. Proceeds from parking concessions are deposited into a special fund that supports DLNR’s system of recreational small boat harbors across the state.
