Quarterback Ryan Wood and running back Amoni Kaili each rushed for a touchdown and the Bingham (Utah) Miners (4-0) held the Kahuku Red Raiders (4-1) to 121 total yards for a 17-0 victory in a matchup of nationally ranked teams held in Las Vegas.

Bingham, the defending Utah 5A champion, is ranked No. 16 in the MaxPreps Xcellent Top 25. Kahuku is No. 23.

The Red Raiders were shut out for the first time since August 2008 against Kamehameha and played without sophomore quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, who injured his shoulder in a win over Aiea last week.

Backup Thorton Alapa was 6-for-16 for 75 yards with an interception.

Kahuku did not run a play in Bingham territory until 26 seconds remained in the third quarter.

Alapa threw a 36-yard pass to Enoch Nawahine midway through the fourth quarter for Kahuku’s largest gain from scrimmage.

The Red Raiders advanced the ball to the Bingham 4 but threw an incomplete pass on fourth down.

Wood scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to cap Bingham’s second drive of the game, and Brandon Lopez added a 32-yard field goal for the Miners in the second quarter after Kahuku kept Bingham out of the end zone three straight times from the 1-yard line.

Kaili had a 30-yard run off a fake punt to keep a Bingham drive alive in the third quarter and capped it off with an 8-yard touchdown run to put the Miners ahead 17-0.

Nawahine was held to 26 rushing yards on 15 carries. Kainoa Crismon had three receptions for 29 yards for the Red Raiders.

Kahuku, ranked No. 2 in the state behind Saint Louis, has not won a game on the mainland in five tries. The Red Raiders return home and will earn a forfeit win over Kaiser next week before hosting Radford and playing at Campbell to end the OIA regular season.
