The YMCA of Honolulu is teaming up with Pasha Hawaii and Hawaii Stevedores to host a community donation drive to help kids affected by Hurricane Harvey.
The team hopes to fill a 40-foot container that will be parked at YMCA Nuuanu from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The YMCA is looking for donations of new or unused sports equipment, outdoor and indoor play equipment, toys, books, games, craft supplies, Lego and building kits, backpacks, stuffed animals and nonperishable snacks.
Pasha Hawaii has offered to deliver the donations to more than 30 YMCAs serving the greater Houston area.
Monetary donations can also be made directly to ymcahouston.org/blog/support-harvey-relief-efforts or by texting the word HOUSTON to 91999.
Sealant work will close trail
The Makapuu Lighthouse trail and parking lot will be closed from Wednesday through Friday as a water-resistant coating is applied to the entry road and parking lot.
The sealant requires time to cure and vehicles must stay off the pavement during this time, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said.
Next week, the park will be closed for an additional day when parking stalls are striped. The exact date will be posted on the Division of State Parks website at dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp.
“We apologize to hikers for this inconvenience, and have tried to schedule the work to minimize disruption to park use,” Curt Cottrell, state parks administrator, said in a statement. “However, this work will ensure that the pavement in the park remains in good condition for many more years.”
The work will not affect the Makapuu Lookout along Kalanianaole Highway. During the closure, the public may access the Kaiwi shoreline from the park boundary adjacent to Sandy Beach.
Quarry road repaving to start
The repaving of Kapaa Quarry Road begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday, continues until 3:30 p.m., and will take place on weekdays for up to two months.
Work will start on the Kalanianaole Highway side, which will close portions of Kapaa Quarry Road. Access to Kapaa Quarry Place will be from Mokapu Boulevard during the first phase. Access to the road will shift to Kalanianaole Highway when paving begins on the Mokapu Boulevard side in phase two.
Message boards and detour signs will inform drivers of alternative routes through Kalanianaole Highway, Kamehameha Highway and the H-3 freeway.
