Hawaii’s John John Florence and Sebastian Zietz continued on in the hunt for the Hurley Pro title at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif., on Wednesday.
Florence, ranked No. 2 on the World Surf League tour and the defending world champion, scored a 19.07 to 13.33 victory over Japan’s Hiroto Ohhara. Florence will face No. 21 Jeremy Flores of France and a yet-to-be determined opponent in the fourth round when surfing resumes today, conditions permitting. The winner of that heat will head to the quarterfinals, with the other two going to the fifth round.
Zietz, ranked No. 15, delivered a 16.76 to 7.04 knockout of No. 23 Italo Ferreira of Brazil in the third round. Zietz then missed his shot of going straight to the quarterfinals by placing third to Brazil’s Adriano de Souza (No. 6) and Jadson Andre (No. 32) in the fourth round. Zietz still has a shot at the quarterfinals if he can beat South Africa’s Jordy Smith, the WSL’s top-ranked surfer, in the fifth round.
Australia’s Julian Wilson (No. 5), Mick Fanning (No. 12), Ace Buchan (No. 18) and Bede Durbidge (No. 22), Brazil’s Filipe Toledo (No. 9), Portugal’s Frederico Morais (No. 14), and Kanoa Igarashi (No. 28) of Huntington Beach, Calif., are also still in contention.
