After navigating a hectic homecoming week, Kona Andres mustered enough energy to cap Friday’s festivities by leading Leilehua to a 51-14 win over Nanakuli at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.
Part of the school’s leadership group, Andres spearheaded the Mules’ third straight win by completing 20 of 28 pass attempts for 213 yards and four touchdowns.
Running back James McGary added a 100-yard performance on the ground and the Mules (4-2, 3-2) continued their ascent in the OIA Red standings.
“I’m physically tired after this game,” Leilehua coach Mark Kurisu said of managing the various pressures of homecoming. “It was 51-14 and it felt like 51-50.”
Andres completed 12 of his first 13 attempts and threw touchdown passes on three of Leilehua’s first four possessions after a busy day on campus.

“He ran an assembly almost the whole day. He had to plan and get everything right and you could tell,” Kurisu said. “You could see in his face he’s mentally tired.”
Once on the field, the Mules’ short-passing game taxed Nanakuli’s energy and the Mules rolled to their first 50-point night since 2014.
Andres started the scoring by finishing a 13-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Chad Dilay.
Nanakuli’s offense was on the field for 10 pays in the first quarter and netted a loss of 1 yard. But Po’okela Pi’ilani sparked the Golden Hawks with a 26-yard run on the opening play of the second quarter and Nahum Kipi completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Sinai Robello to put Nanakuli on the board.
Andres answered with his third scoring pass, a 24-yard post to Jeremy Ramos. The Golden Hawks closed within a touchdown when Thomas Nahinu intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 5 yards for a score.
But after Akoni Tom-Makue drilled a 32-yard field goal, the first of three on the night, and Leilehua broke away with Jerome Holliday’s 34-yard pick-6 with one minute left in the half.
