Sonest Furtado scored twice to give the Hawaii soccer team its third straight road victory, 2-1 at Grand Canyon in Phoenix, on Sunday afternoon.
The senior forward got UH (5-4) on the board in the 61st minute on a cross from Sarah Lau. Once GCU’s Amanda Lopez equalized on a cross in the 72nd minute, Furtado struck from a similar spot as her first goal — about 12 yards out shaded to the left — on an assist upfield from Kellsie Gleason and Lau in the 85th minute.
“Start of the game, it was pretty toasty out there,” Furtado said of the 90-plus-degree heat in a postgame phone interview. “That kind of affected our first half a little, I’d say. We didn’t really come out as strong as we wanted to. But then we didn’t let the heat affect us. Second half we came to play and we put it away.”
They were the team-best third and fourth goals of the season for Furtado, a senior who has 11 career scores. It was her second multi-goal game.
The Wahine swept their two-game trip to Arizona State (1-0 in overtime) and GCU after winning the finale of their previous three-game road trip (2-0 at Idaho State). The GCU Lopes fell to 3-6-1.
UH will head back out next week for its Sept. 28 Big West opener at UC Davis.
HPU soccer team wins at Saint Martin’s
The Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team got a late goal from Lucas Libbra to top host Saint Martin’s 3-2 in Lacey, Wash., on Sunday.
HPU (2-1-1) overcame a two-goal deficit with scores by Gerrit Arzberger (52nd minute), Josch Cuerten (69th), and Libbra (89th), keeping the Saints (0-5) winless.
The Sharks continue their five-game road trip at Concordia-Irvine on Thursday.
