`Iolani alum Lorens Chan finished his first season on Canada’s Mackenzie Tour ranked 50th on the Order of Merit.
Chan, a 23-year-old UCLA graduate, played nine events. He won $13,748, with a sixth-place finish at the Syncrude Oil Country Championship and two other Top 25s. His scoring average was 69.66.
Chan tied for 41st in the season-ending Freedom 55 Financial Championship on Sunday. Rico Hoey won the tournament to move into fifth on the Order of Merit and earn status on next year’s Web.com Tour, along with Canada player of the year Kramer Hickok, Robby Shelton, Johnny Ruiz and Patrick Newcomb. The top five are from the U.S.
Those finishing 6-10 on the Order of Merit earn an exemption into the final stage of the Web.com Tour Q-School. Players finishing 11-20 get an exemption into the second stage.
Ko Olina offers Get Golf Ready
Ko Olina’s seventh session of Get Golf Ready opens this week. The “Debut” Beginner series costs $129 plus tax for five hours of instruction. The “Tee It Up” Intermediate class is $149 plus tax.
Classes include on-course experience the final week for beginners, where there is a maximum 6-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Beginners also get free range balls and equipment for lessons and more than $100 in golf-related coupons.
Intermediate classes are limited to four students and include more time on the course, along with range balls, equipment and coupons.
Beginner classes run Thursday afternoons (starting today), Saturday and Sunday (women only) mornings. Intermediate classes are Thursday 5-6 p.m. and Saturday 8-9 a.m.

Okino moves up on Japan tour
Cyd Okino’s rookie year on the Japan LPGA’s Step-Up Tour continued with a tie for 40th Sunday at the Sanyang Ladies Cup, in Okayama Prefecture.
The Punahou graduate shot 74-72 to win $1,300 in an event shortened to two days because of a typhoon. The winner was Shina Kanazawa at 136.
Okino is playing in the Chupa Ladies Cup in Hiroshima this week.
