Bystanders rescued a woman from California from the ocean off Makena on Friday.
At 12:30 p.m. Friday, rescue crews in South Maui responded to a report of an unresponsive female pulled from the water at Makena Landing, the Maui Fire Department said by email.
The victim, 57, a visitor from Fremont, Calif., had been snorkeling and was found floating face down by a family member. The family member brought the woman to shore, where a nurse and a firefighter on vacation administered CPR.
The woman responded within a minute and started breathing on her own,
Wailea firefighters arrived at 12:41 p.m. to find her already breathing. Paramedics treated the woman before transporting her in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, the department said.
100-acre brush fire contained
Fire crews contained a 100-acre brush fire that started off the side of Haleakala Highway on Thursday and spread to a fallow sugar cane field.
The blaze was declared contained at 2:03 a.m. Friday, and two engine companies and two water tankers were mopping up the area into the afternoon. Crews were to continue to monitor the area for hot spots.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, the Maui Fire Department said by email Saturday.
The fire was reported by motorists on Haleakala Highway at 3:56 p.m. Thursday. While small at first, it spread quickly with the gusty tradewinds.
By the time Kahului firefighters arrived just after 4 p.m., the fire was already 2 to 3 acres and could not be contained.
Woman is arrested in assault on Kauai
A woman who tried to board a bus holding a liquor bottle was arrested after she allegedly punched the driver.
The Kapaa woman, 20, tried to get on The Kauai Bus on Friday night at Kukui Grove Shopping Center, Kauai police said by email.
When the driver told her she couldn’t bring the bottle aboard, the woman became angry and hit the driver several times in the face, police said. The victim, a 50-year-old woman from Anahola, was treated at the scene by medics.
The woman left the bus, but was stopped by police officers who happened to be nearby, police said.
Police and medics were called to the scene at about 9:30 p.m.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault and interference with the operator of a transit vehicle.
