An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging the alleged driver of a pickup truck that struck and killed a 6-month-old boy in Waimanalo last December with hit-and-run and negligent homicide.
The indictment charges Annie Akau, 26, of Waimanalo, with negligent homicide, driving without a valid driver’s license and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury or death.
Honolulu police said Donovan Naleieha was in a stroller being pushed by his mother in a marked crosswalk on Kalanianaole Highway on Dec. 5 at Oluolu Street when a pickup truck crashed into him, his 24-year-old mother and 3-year-old brother.
Donovan and his older brother went to separate hospitals by ambulance in critical and serious condition, respectively. Their mother was treated at the scene. Donovan died the following day.
Police said the pickup truck continued traveling for roughly 60 feet past the crosswalk with the stroller underneath it before the driver stopped, exited the vehicle and fled. They identified the driver as Akau based on security video from a nearby 7-Eleven store.
