The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative received calls Friday from members reporting telephone calls from a man demanding immediate payment on behalf of the utility.
KIUC said it does not initiate calls to customers about late bills. Similar incidents were reported to KIUC in January and April.
The utility said members should never provide personal, confidential or financial information to anyone when responding to unsolicited phone calls or emails. If uncertain whether the call is legitimate, get the caller’s name, number and company name and say you’ll call back after verifying the information. Then report the call to the police.
KIUC offers SmartHub, which provides online account information to members, at kiuc.smarthub.coop. Or call 246-4300.
Funding secured for new film
A fledgling Kauai film company has raised more than $100,000 to begin production of a movie made with all local talent and resources.
The Garden Island reported that the film, “Too Much Life,” is a modern high school drama about teenagers living in a world of social media, cyberbullying and online relationships.
“Here’s a chance for us to create our own local production by Kauai people, meaning our youth, who are going to be our next generation of creatives — whether they’re storytellers, videographers or anyone in that industry,” said Randy Francisco, county film commissioner.
Backing for the Kauai Made Films project helps establish the foundation for a sustainable film industry on Kauai, he said. Filming on the island could provide jobs and internships for youths.
“The driving force behind the production of ‘Too Much Life’ is to share a story about our youth with the world,” said director Edwin Sawyer, who co-founded the nonprofit Kauai Film Academy in 2000 to provide guidance to youths interested in graphic design, camera work, music recording and sound mixing.
A local cast is already committed to star in “Too Much Life,” including Alana Blanchard, Kepa Kruse, Sonya Balmores, Nativa Law, Kirra Leonard and Makana Cabral. Filming is scheduled to start in March with a projected release date of October 2018.
