Seven years after re-entering the fashion design world, Amos Kotomori is feeling lucky.
The Hawaii designer is known for his involvement with high-profile fashion events in Honolulu as well as his mentoring of Honolulu Community College Fashion Technology students. In 2015, he was nominated for a costuming award by the Los Angeles Film Review for his work on independent film “Under the Blood Red Sun.” He’s a three-time Hawaii Fashion Guild Designer of the Year.
Kotomori recently left his design position at Jim Thompson: The Thai Silk Co., to focus on his eponymous menswear brand full time., and will be presenting a free preview of his holiday collection on Saturday at Neiman Marcus.
“My designs are about being lucky, possibilities and feeling good,” he said of motifs that include 1001 origami cranes; the piko, symbolic of creation and new beginnings; and bamboo, reflecting strength and resilience.

“Priorities change moment by moment,” said the cancer and heart surgery survivor, who is eager to see how far he can take his brand.
He said he’s grateful for the five years he spent working for Jim Thompson, learning from the company’s vertical production system that ranges from the raising of silkworms to fabric production, printing, sewing and leather-working.
“It taught me so much about design, business and personal goals,” he said. “Time, and how to use it well, was the most important lesson.”
