The bus driver shortage on Maui has eased somewhat, the state Department of Education said Friday.
Two previously consolidated bus routes have been restored for Maui High and Maui Waena Intermediate schools, the department said:
>> Route GR14A makes a single morning and afternoon run from the Hale Kihei Housing and Makai Heights Subdivisions in Kihei to and from Maui High.
>> Route GR18 A/B makes two morning and afternoon runs to and from Maui Waena Intermediate School. The first serves the Kahului area east of Puunene Avenue from Puukani Street to Kaahumanu Avenue, and north of West Kauai Street to Kaahumanu Avenue. The second run serves the Sands Hills, Puuone Tract, Kanaloa Houselots Subdivision and Paukukalo areas.
On Kauai, the shortage of drivers with commercial licenses remains steady at seven. School bus routes have been consolidated to adjust, and all schools are still being serviced.
Driver candidates are now in the licensing process, and routes will be restored as they enter service. Interested drivers with or without a CDL should contact the Student Transportation Services Branch at 586-0170.

Sewer work to alter Kauai traffic
Sewer line inspections will prompt lane closures next week in the area of Kuhio Highway and Haleilio Road in Wailua, Kauai County announced.
The Wastewater Management Division will perform inspection and maintenance work on its sewer collection system Thursday and Friday.
Specifically:
>> The outermost northbound lane of Kuhio Highway, near the Haleilio Road intersection, will be closed from 10 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Access to Papaloa Road from Kuhio Highway will also be closed. Papaloa Road can be accessed from Lanikai Street.
>> The southbound right-turn lane on Haleilio Road, at the intersection with Kuhio Highway, will be closed from 11:30 p.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday. During this time, motorists may use the left-turn lane on Haleilio Road to make a right turn onto Kuhio Highway.
Motorists should expect delays and adjust travel times, the county said. Questions can be directed to Jason Kagimoto at the Department of Public Works at 241-4083 or jkagimoto@kauai.gov.
