Emily Maglio is an animal sciences major, but the Hawaii senior middle lately has been minoring in urban planning.
The Canadian national has put up 38 blocks in the past two weeks, including a combined 18 in two road matches last week. The efforts against Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge earned her a second consecutive Big West volleyball defensive player of the week honor on Monday.
The 6-foot-3 Maglio tied her career high on Friday against the 49ers with her third consecutive match with 10 blocks. She added a match-high 14 kills, hitting .321, for her second straight double-double.
Against the Matadors on Saturday, Maglio had 13 kills — her ninth time in 10 matches in double digits — to go along with eight blocks. She leads the conference with 114 total blocks and 1.54 blocks per set, which rank her eighth and ninth nationally.
Also on Monday, Hawaii (13-6, 7-1 BWC) moved up three places to 48 in the Ratings Percentage Index, the computer-generated rankings used by the NCAA to derive a team’s strength of schedule. All of the Wahine’s losses have come against teams with higher RPI: Utah (10), UCLA (15), BYU (17), San Diego (24), Cal Poly (26) and Marquette (36). They only have one win over a team with a higher RPI: Baylor (22).
Hawaii hosts UC Riverside (9-10, 1-6) on Friday and Cal State Fullerton (4-15, 0-7) on Saturday in 7 p.m. matches at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Furtado voted offensive player of week
Hawaii soccer senior forward Sonest Furtado was named the Big West offensive player of the week Monday, the second time in 2017 she picked up that award.
Furtado tallied both of UH’s goals in a 2-1 home win over UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, then assisted on Lillie French’s goal in a 2-1 loss to Cal State Northridge on Sunday.
The Waianae native has six goals and four assists this season, both career highs. She’s tied for 10th in UH career goals with Chelsea Deptula at 13.
UH (6-8, 1-4 Big West) hosts Cal Poly (6-9-1, 1-4) on its senior day Sunday.
Darland scores goal in HPU men’s loss
Josiah Darland scored at 48:39, but the Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team lost to Point Loma 2-1 in overtime Monday in San Diego.
Eduardo Gallardo scored the game-winner at 102:39 for the Sea Lions (9-2-2, 6-0-2 PacWest).
The Sharks, who had a player sent off in the 62nd minute, dropped to 4-7-2, 2-6-1.

The Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer team managed just one shot on goal in a 2-0 loss to Biola on Monday in La Mirada, Calif.
The Vulcans fell to 6-5-2, 3-4-1 PacWest, while the Eagles moved to 9-2-1, 5-2-1.

Macedo siblings win junior surf event
Maui’s Summer Macedo won the women’s junior title and sibling Ocean Macedo claimed the men’s junior crown at the season-ending Hurley Surf Club Pro on Monday at Turtle Bay Resort.
Tahiti’s Vahine Fierro won the women’s pro title.
Hawaii’s Barron Mamiya and Savanna Stone took home junior regional championships and Zoe McDougall claimed the women’s regional qualifying title.
