Maui police temporarily placed Lokelani Intermediate School on lockdown Friday afternoon after receiving reports of a man holding a rifle next to a car parked at the school.
Police arrived and detained a 45-year-old man who matched the description of the suspect and was identified by a witness.
The officers searched his vehicle and found an air rifle in the trunk.
The man said that he was picking up his daughter and moved the air rifle to the back seat in order to make room for her.
Police reopened the school at 2:45 p.m. and parents were allowed to pick up their children.
The man was warned and reprimanded and was released at the scene.
30-acre brush fire leads to closure of Kaalaiki Road
Hawaii island Police Department said a 30-acre brush fire near Higashi Camp and Keaiwa Camp forced the closure of Kaalaiki Road Friday night. There was no detour, so police asked the public to avoid the area.
No homes were being threatened as of Friday night and additional fire crews were being called to the scene to assist.
Police also said the northbound lane of the Bayfront Highway in Hilo from Pauahi Street to Waianuenue Avenue was closed Friday due to high waves.
